Future of our fisheries

Cabinet has approved that new regulations can be made to require fishing permit holders to use electronic catch reporting, geospatial position reporting and electronic (camera) monitoring of commercial fishing activity, and to enable the use of innovative trawl technologies.

These proposals formed part of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) consultation document - The Future of our Fisheries - released last year, as part of its review of the fisheries management system

The Future of our Fisheries work programme is to be delivered over five years, and includes three strategic proposals, and the two regulatory change proposals now approved by Cabinet:

  1. Roll out the Integrated Electronic Monitoring and Reporting System (IEMRS)
  2. Enabling Innovative Trawl Technology (EITT)

We will keep you informed of developments on these reforms.
