Vessels required to comply with Ballast Water Management Convention in 4 weeks

Vessels will need to comply with the Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) from 8 September 2017.

The BWMC, adopted in 2004, set standards and procedures for the management and control of ships' ballast water and sediments, aimed at preventing the spread of harmful and invasive aquatic organisms from one region to another.  With Maritime New Zealand’s Marine Protection Rule Part 300: Ballast Water Management becoming effective on 8 September, all vessels will need to comply with the convention.

Part 300 can be viewed on the MNZ website.

If you have any questions about the legal implications of this rule, or any other rule, please email Peter Dawson, or phone 03 544 1967.
