Dawson & Associates are recognised as trusted advisers to yacht and superyacht owners on all aspects of acquisition, ownership, operation, and sale. We advise buyers or sellers in transactions around the globe - including Italy, France, Spain, UK, Florida, Australia, the Pacific Islands and elsewhere.

The Sale and Purchase Process

Our work covers vessels from 7m up to 80m - no transaction is too small.

We advise on:

  • Ownership structures

  • Offshore company incorporation

  • Vessel agreements (crew, management, sale and purchase, build)

  • Choice of flag

  • Vessel registration/deletion

We regularly interact with many of the well-known open registers and have an international network of agents that assist us.  This includes vessel management companies, insurance brokers, sale and purchase brokers, offshore company managers, customs agents and marine surveyors.  We also manage the documentary and practical aspects of the sale process, including the appointment of surveyors and agents in foreign ports, and provide advice on heavy lift contracts and related matters.

Customs, VAT/GST

Our team has a working knowledge of the Customs and VAT/GST implications of vessel sales in many jurisdictions.  Our access to local specialists can assist with bespoke advice for a specific transaction.

We regularly advise vessel owners on New Zealand customs entry and export requirements.

Commercial Chartering

Our extensive network of superyacht contacts in New Zealand and Australia, and around the globe, makes us uniquely positioned to advise owners and operators of visiting superyachts and leisure yachts on the commercial chartering of these vessels while in New Zealand, as well as on the fiscal implications of the private and/or commercial use of the vessels.

Vessel Builds

We are familiar with, and advise on, many vessel build contracts in New Zealand and abroad, including the typical contracts used by major yards in France, Italy and Spain.
